🍺 SINGLE, DOUBLE, TRIPLE IPA... WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
You've just come across a WhiteFrontier label that says ‘Double IPA’ or even ‘Cryo Fresh Double NEIPA’ and you think to yourself:
OK, that sounds cool, but... what's the difference between this and a normal IPA?
Welcome to the (sometimes confusing) world of IPAs. Don't panic: whether you're a self-confessed beer geek or just curious, we'll explain everything, WhiteFrontier style.
⚖️ The simple IPA: balance
The classic IPA is the starting point:
5.5% to 7.5% alcohol
Aromatic hops, noticeable but not overpowering bitterness
Medium body, smooth texture, fruity or resinous aromas
This is the beer that makes you say, "OK, I like hops." At WhiteFrontier, an IPA such as Amor Fati, Single Crush, Copenhagen's Calling or Shooting Star (in the Cryo Fresh version) ticks all the boxes.
💥 The double IPA: the next level
The double IPA is an IPA that has been pumped up:
7.5% to 9.5% alcohol (or more)
More malt → more sugar → more alcohol More hops → more aromas and bitterness
A denser body to carry it all
It's a beer that takes a little more time, that you drink for the experience. For us, it's Super Nova: a Cryo Fresh Double NEIPA, ultra juicy, intense, long on the palate. And formerly beers like Citra or Bien? or Grand Amour.
🌌 What about a Triple IPA?
If we're going that far... Around 10% and above, with a concentration of hops and sugar. We can even go for Quadruple IPAs! Phew. This is beer for geeks to compete with.
❄️ And what about Cryo Fresh?
Cryo Fresh is a hop treatment by Yakima Chief: the hops are not dried, but frozen immediately after harvesting and then cold-treated. The result?
Ultra-fresh aromas
Preserved essential oils
Maximum aromatic intensity (mango, lime, resin, etc.).
You'll find it in Shooting Star (Hazy IPA) and Super Nova (Double NEIPA).
⚙️ How do you actually make a double IPA?
Brewing a double IPA isn't just about “adding more stuff.” You have to:
Increase the malt (for sugar, and therefore alcohol)
Adapt the hops (more quantity, but not just any hops)
Master the balance: if you add too much without structure, it becomes heavy.
And often, add massive dry hopping (hop addition after fermentation)
It's a more expensive, more technical recipe, but when done right, it takes off.
In summary : which IPA is right for you ?
| You want... | Choose... |
|---|---|
| A cool aperitif, an introduction to hops | Simple IPA |
| Fruitiness, juiciness, a tropical cloud | Hazy IPA |
| Taste a field of frozen hops | Cryo Fresh IPA |
| An aromatic, intense, and rounded punch | Double NEIPA |
| Show your friends you're not here to play around | Triple IPA (maybe) |
Final thoughts
At WhiteFrontier, every IPA has its own personality. It's not just about the alcohol content or the name and design on the can, it's about how you feel when you drink it.
